The highest emotion we can experience in our life is love.  It is the penultimate experience of an enlightened mind/brain. Love is what puts us together, and what keeps us together. It insures our survival as individuals, as a society, as humans, and as a part of a greater Earth and Universe.

When we function as intelligent and healthy humans, what we experience and give to each other is boundless love. This is conscious thought and action that reflects concern for others around us as being as important or as more important than our own interests.

What is essential is invisible to the eye.

Friendship and love, this goes before all else.

I find myself
When I lose myself in another.

The most beautiful paradox-
As I give to you and make the greatest sacrifice
I give up nothing
And have everything.

Eric Fromm tells us in his book "The Art of Loving", love takes many forms in this life, and Romantic Love- the expression of passionate feelings towards one special individual- is among them.

When an individual truly understands the deepest meaning of love, one sees as well that there is no separation between the expression of Romantic Love and the deepest expressions of love itself it all it's forms.

The RED HEART Book is simply an expression and meditation on this wonderful aspect of romantic human loving, in prose and in simple keyboard/flute instrumental music. The themes are universal for all- as long as you've got a heart.

Below (and the short blue piece above) are a few excerpts from this book's 19 poems. The music sample above is from the music CD of original music pieces that compliment and accompany this book.

Read slowly and savor your own thoughts and feelings.

A Love

Once there was a man who loved a woman.
He held her tenderly each night, and softly brushed his fingertips gently across her face.

He said, ?Where did this love come from??

?Did it come from the stars, from a nebula far beyond the reach of my sight, to land here in my heart? Did it travel across the breadth of millions of galaxies, never coming to rest, searching for its home at last in my beating heart??

He said, ?What do I do with this love??

?What can I do with the infinitude of feelings that reside within me? What place can hold all of this, what can I do to express the endless ceaseless tide of emotion that envelopes me from the time I wake, until the time each night when I finally repose in sleep??

He felt her pulse faintly against his body, her warmth flow into his soul with each breath, like a dance, sometimes together, sometimes oblique.

He said, ?I have never been here before, and I do not know what to do.?

?There is no book for this love, no instructions, no signs pointing the way. There is no one to ask or to tell me the way.?

And they sat together, and played a melody, unheard since the beginning of time.

Your voice
Like leaves fall softly down
Upon my mind
More softly than a gentle rain

Your footsteps ring upon my walk
As if a bell from heaven sent.

A hug, not first,
But second given unexpected
A gift priceless.

How much do I love you?
On a scale from one to ten-
A million!

Kilauea at peak,
Sun corona plumes ten thousand miles high
Flames of desire
From every pore of my skin-

I exaggerate not!

Nothing to quench the thirst
Less than the touch of your fingers
Between mine
Your fine hair against my cheek?
Then I melt into a pool of lovely, lovely
Complete contentment
As wide as the Milky Way.

Suddenly, all the love songs on the radio
Stir my heart, never so caressed?

What is more important than true love?
Nothing!
?Tis God, angels, the meaning of life.
Life itself.

All things of value come from love.
Love contains all true desires.
It is breath, air, total existence.

Love is a hurricane at your front door,
That started as a whisper wind.

Love is frightening
You cannot believe it is possible
It is not what you expected
Nor how you planned it.
Yet it is more than you wished for.

You resist until you can resist no longer,
Until love washes and cascades over you-
An irresistible wave
Wrapping around you
Like a soft warm blanket
Perfectly secure.

Love is unquestionable,
Like the beating of your own heart.
You are as sure as you see the sun in the sky.

Love is a shield that cannot be penetrated
By anything.
Zeus? spears against love
Are mere hay straws ricocheting off
The Great Wall.

Age and appearance matter naught to love.
The wise understand all its? forms.
Love exists separate from anything,
Yet can be expressed through all things.

Know, however, that the highest love is
Rare as an emerald
That few hold.

May my true love be with me always.

I send my gentle guardians
To watch over you
A golden globe surrounding you
Like a fortress of good.

Softly beating wings
The aura of light around
Follow your steps
Sit upon her shoulders
Lightly, lightly.
Remove even the smallest trace
Of doubt and fear
Blessings eternal safe.

Eyelash of heaven
Fingertip of peace
Brush against my dearest
All the day and night.

You are my angel.

Your hair aglow with an auburn halo
Bathes my eyelids with radiance heavenly.
Ah, how could I be more fortunate and blessed?
What vision more beautiful?
None, impossible.

I open my door and delight falls upon my threshold.

I miss you dearly from the moment you depart,
If only you are gone for but a day.
What abyss would I fall into if you leave me
For three days, or four, or more?

Fear not, my love is not a cage of any form,
Nor mental bonds
Of do this, or no,
Of whom you may see,
Or please, or be you with.

It is only when I think of myself
And what I want for myself alone
That I become hopelessly lost
And beyond all redemption.

May my love be but a key to open,
And wings to take you upon air
To soar and reach your heart?s desire.

Beautiful yet strong are the torrents of love?s force
Pulled from the precipice
From high Angel Falls.
Rushing blindly,
Unstoppable from head to toe,
One easily lost in chaos and rush.

I have but one release when I am alone, without-
My efforts though temporary in prose to express
Or I would burst into uncountable fragments
Like water torn apart into white foam and vapor.

Alas, my love is too great
To fit on were a million pages.
I compose in vain,
In respite for only a day,
These, my meager attempts to name the unnamable.

You ask me, from where do these words come?
How do I invent?
Nay, I do not.
I only notate the penultimate melody
Of what I feel and see
Each time we meet.

Anon, when simple sweet soda we share,
I gaze upon,
Two straws together, joined in glass.
My bliss, is that I see, as same,
Our souls touching.

The book and all music was composed and performed by Neil Slade. The poems were written and re-written (and re-written) during February, March, and April of 2003, and appear in the book in the order composed. The music was written and recorded previously with half of the pieces un-released until this date, and the remainder selected from previous original music CDs.

The entire book is typset in beautiful Lucida Calligraphy. The instrumental music CD is 27 minutes in length, about the right length to thoughtfully read through the book (though this book and music bears often and repeated visits).

If you are in love, have ever been in love, or would love to be in love (!) The Red Heart Book is a something very special for yourself or for someone you know.
