The Cabins

When Lingo first purchased the land in 1957, he commuted between it and Denver in the snow free summers only. He and students and friends eventually built all the log cabins which would house various parts of the facility: the kitchen, his living quarters, guest quarters, the library, the bath house, etc. His idea was that the lab would be a Primal Retreat, in which one could study natural behavior and brain function, without outside negative influence from peers, city distractions, pollution, work, television and other media, etc. The wilderness environment provided the optimum situation where one could allow the maximum accurate examination of oneself and others. With just a couple of years, Lingo began living on the mountain year round- yet retaining the primal nature of the lab- no electricity or running water for 35 years! After the long hike up the trail, the first building you arrived at was the kitchen- you were already hungry and thirsty from the hike up! Attached to the top of the kitchen was the dinner or signal bell, by which you could call Lingo or others from anywhere on the land. You could hear this bell for miles. Here's Richard on top of the kitchen roof! Note the bell and rope on the left top.
